Author of "Rayna of Nightwind" - Book 1 of the Taren Series

Rayna of Nightwind

I started working on this novel about five years ago. Surprisingly enough, the story's start, ending and overall plot came to me all at once— it was the actual process of filling in the middle parts that took time! The story of Rayna of Nightwind is full of twists and ironic turns, but I will try to sum it up as neatly as possible without including "spoilers". The story is basically about modern-day college graduate Rayna Powell, sent("magically"?) to a strange land known as Taren. Almost immediately upon her arrival, Rayna finds herself in trouble with the local servants of the throne, called Red Robes. These beings are powerful and malevolent mages whose purpose is to enforce the law set down by their ruler, Nephredom. The Red Robes have determined Rayna to be a threat, and that means death for Rayna if they catch her.

Fortunately Rayna isn't alone. She is accompanied by a stranger with a mysterious past— and a sizable bounty on her head. This stranger, called Keris, believes Rayna to a powerful mage and to be of use to her in her struggle against Nephredom and the Red Robes. Rayna wants no part of this, but reluctantly agrees to come along, because going with Keris seems a better alternative that facing the Red Robes alone. Also, Keris promises to take Rayna to the ancient city of Dosk, where Rayna hopes to find clues on how to return to her own world. Along the way, they pick up two more companions— Arstinax, a large, powerful warrior, and Quan a young boy. Rayna struggles to come to terms with the magic growing inside her; she had been a science student and the concept of magic is a difficult pill for her to swallow. However, in Taren, magic may be key to her survival. In the meantime, Lord Nephredom, Reagent of Taren has a sinister plan in the works— one that involves unleashing evil creatures upon the land as to destroy Taren, and any hope of Rayna ever seeing home again.

Like most summaries, this one only scratches the surface of all that happens in the book. It was fun putting all the pieces together while writing this novel. It has elements of some of my favorite authors, yet is very unique in many ways. The core of the novel is decidedly fantasy, but watch out for the sci-fi twist!
